Exchange 2010 RTM!

The big news today is that Exchange 2010 is now code complete. The senior leadership team has signed off on the final code, and it has been sent to early adopters for a final look before its public release. This Release To Manufacturing (RTM) milestone means we are well on our way to general availability and launch at TechEd Europe in November. For those of you attending TechEd in Berlin this year, be sure to visit the Exchange booth and tell them what you think of the product. I caught some of you on video with Crystal Flores at TechEd US earlier this year…Crystal will be looking for more of you in Berlin in a few weeks. If you can’t join in person, tune in via the Web (www.thenewefficiency.com) to be part of the launch.

What's new in Unified Messaging in Exchange 2010?

I recently sat down with Ankur Kothari to talk about the new Unified Messaging features coming in Exchange 2010.
In this demo, Ankur shows us dialing rules that allow you to create custom voice routing for people that get your voice mail, and the text preview of voice mail that is new in Exchange 2010.
These are really cool features that give you much more control of your voice mail.

Exchange Web Services - What you didn't know

Back again with the Exchange team! We've already shared how we're building the next version of Exchange to be cloud-ready and some of the cool features you can get through Outlook Web Access or Outlook Live. Today, we're giving you an overview of some of the work we've been doing to make it easier for developers and partners to hook into Exchange.
We've always had a 'best together' experience with Outlook, but our core email functionality and many other pieces of Exchange have of course always been open to other clients using standard protocols. In Exchange 2007 we introduced Exchange Web Services (EWS) and in the next version of Exchange (codenamed Exchange 14) we've continued to invest in making EWS even easier to use, with a managed client API, and you can use standard development tools to use EWS to access and managed the email, calendar, contacts and other content in mailboxes.
EWS is a very useful API for building apps against Exchange, and is even being adopted by competitors for products such as Apple's new mail client. To illustrate the openness take a look at the EWS-based Vista Gadget and same widget for Mac OS X - a good illustration of cross platform use of the same API.

Introducing Outlook Live

I dropped in again to visit the Exchange team, this time KC announced the new name of Exchange labs is Outlook Live, and Ian gave us a demo of the cool new features in this latest release. Some of the things Ian showed were:

cross browser experience (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari)
embedded IM and presence
threaded conversation view

Announcing Exchange 14

I recently had the opportunity to meet with KC Lemson and Jim Lucey to talk about Exchange 14. Jim talked in depth about Exchange Labs and how we use that to do large scalability testing of Exchange - we currently host 3.5 Million mailboxes on Exchange Labs. Jim also gives a brief demo of the user experience, showing how you have access to your mail and calendar via Outlook, the browser, or your mobile phone.
