We got Jay Paloma, Deployment Technical Specialist from the Singapore Office to tell people how they can be ready for Windows 7.

The key is, if you are ready for Vista, you will be ready for Windows 7.

Jay shows us how to use a free tool called Application Compatiblity Toolkit, and use it to help us manage AppCompat.

Remember, if your application can run in Vista, it can run in Windows 7.

Windows Vista at Carbocloro Brazil

Carbocloro is a chemical producer in Sao Paolo Brazil. When they deployed Vista, they saw both performance and security improvements to their infrastructure. The Vista deployment allowed them to implement company wide standards for desktop updates and management. They were able to move from seven deployment images to just one.
In this video Alaor da Silva talks about some of the challenges and processes that went into their Vista deployment, as well as the benefits and problems they were able to solve.

For the last but not least part I wanted to talk briefly about the new improvements in reliability and compatibly inside IE8. While IE8 displays content in its most standards compliant way by default as part of Microsoft’s commitment to Interoperability, there is also a built-in compatibility model that allows for content to be displayed like it did in IE7. Since March, 2008, we have been proactively reaching out to site developers and content publishers worldwide, providing education and resources about this model. In my previous post I did talk a lot about browser interop (ScreenCast: Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 part 1: Interop Goodies), and how even in beta 1 how we had the emulate IE7 mode to help facilitate compatibility. In beta 2 we now have a new option called compatibility view, and you no longer have to restart the browser for it to the page to render in compatibility mode. Additionally different tabs can render differently Ultimately we still recommend that you modify the web site or server with the meta tag (click here to learn more: Defining Document Compatibility)

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 Faster and Easier Browsing

As you can tell I am pretty excited about IE8, I believe it will fundamentally improve’s everyone’s browsing experience, people like you and me, but also my dad. Honest story my dad knows how to search the web using live search, which in of itself is impressive, but when he finds let’s say an address to a restaurant, he pulls out a map to find directions. I know what your saying, we all pull out maps, but are they made out paper? My dad’s is. So how can a browser help, by bringing everyday online services to people like my dad, in a new function called accelerators. Accelerators are just one of the many improvements that extend your browsing experience beyond the page while staying connected with the things you care about most.

There is a fantastic list of new features, from search, find on page highlighting, tab improvements (work they way they are supposed to now)..etc, that I could fill my desktop with all the improvements, not to mention Webslices! So instead of me of doing that, while don’t I show you, take a look at the screencast where I showcase all the features that make IE 8 faster and easier to use.

Go Go Go! Vista Performance with Brad Marrs

In the interview, he talks about some of the feedback his team received when Vista was released and how they improved the performance in Vista SP1.

Vista zero touch deployment at New Horizons Belfast

Alan McBurney discusses how and why New Horizons deployed Vista SP1 in their environment using SCCM 2007. Previously they were using ghost to push out XP images and now they are much happier with SCCM 2007, WDS, and Vista SP1.

At 7:00 min - check out the tips & tricks section. Here he shows how he fixed some of the access denied errors he was having and also some useful PXE boot configuration options to change in the SCCM console. After this, he gives us a demo of what happens after the PXE boot and points out how to view the SCCM log file to troubleshoot scheduled tasks.

Slipstreaming Internet Explorer 8 into Windows Vista

Lately, I have been doing a lot fun work with the IE 8 team. Look for a TechNet radio interview shortly I did with Jane Maliouta who is a IE Deployment Program Manager. In talking with Jane she told that she had written a post on how to slipstream IE 8 into an Windows Vista image. The interview is with Russ Humphries, a Program Manager in our Security Technologies group. He speaks fairly candidly about BitLocker and I think it is a pretty good interview for my first one.

It is a long interview though so clear about 45 mins to watch the whole thing. I will keep them shorter in the future.

He and his team recently lead a 10,000 seat deployment of Vista with SP1 for a major Canadian transportation company with offices around the globe. Austin Wilson has been working with the product team on UAC well before it was even created in Windows Vista and gives us some insight into why it is the way it is. He clears up what UAC really is and speaks about the parental control capabilities with UAC. Some hard questions are answered like why should a consumer or an IT Pro even bother to run UAC and if we're doing anything about the number of prompts people get. Additionally, he shows us how and why an IT Pro can still use UAC and not get prompted as well as giving us insight into what are plans for UAC are in the future.

Remote Server Admin Tools (RSAT) with Jason Leznek

Jason looks after management in Vista, which makes him a busy guy. He was able to find time a quick 8 minutes for us between two meetings to give me a quick demo of the new RSAT tools for remote management of Windows Server 2003 and 2008. The new tool also includes support for Group Policy Preferences, which is a slick new feature that allows you to set defaults on a machine in the same way you'd set policy, but the user can later change them if they want to.
