Exchange 2010 at Global Crossing

The second stop on the Exchange early adopter road trip was Vegas. The customer we visited with, Global Crossing, was actually just in town for a conference, but who am I to turn down a visit to Sin City?
Global Crossing is upgrading to Exchange 2010 to take advantage of the great new e-mail archiving, cheaper storage options, and as a replacement for its legacy voicemail system.
CIO Magazine also caught up with Global Crossing this week and posted this story on the cost savings the company hopes to realize by standardizing on Windows phones and EAS and moving off of BlackBerry smartphones.

I followed Crystal and Joey with my camera yesterday, and in this video they share their thoughts on the day 1 keynote.
Stephen Elop closed out day 1 of TechEd Europe with the announcement of General Availability of Exchange 2010. In the keynote, he talked about some of the new features in 2010, like the new protection and management capabilities.
He also talked about Cloud Computing, and how we're putting the choice in the hands of IT Pros - you can decide which parts, and how much of your environment you want to move to the cloud.
The Windows Server team also showed off some of the stuff they're doing around management and provisioning - really good stuff!

IIS 7.5 Application Request Routing RTW

Today marks the final version of IIS Application Request Routing (ARR) 2.0 RTW – an extension for IIS that enables Web server administrators, hosting providers, and Content Delivery Network providers to increase Web application scalability and reliability through rule-based routing, client and host name affinity, load balancing of HTTP server requests, and distributed disk caching. With ARR 2.0, administrators can optimize resource utilization for application servers to reduce management costs for Web server farms and shared hosting environments.

I tagged along with the Exchange team to shoot some video of some customers who are using Exchange 2010 today.
Our first stop was Lifetime Products - manufacturer of basketball hoops, folding tables and all kinds of other cool stuff.

Alexander Nikolayev, program manager for FPE, walks us through how all of the anti-spam features work, including the new functionality with FPE over the previous version. After a couple minutes we dive right into the whiteboard walking through the mail flow anti-spam features with connection, protocol, and content filtering.

Dogfooding Security-Related Features

Yale Li and Price Oden, from Microsoft Information Security, explain the second phase of dogfooding a product on the enterprise, formally known as First & Best Program. This second step consists of doing a security assessment on specific features in the product. For the first phase go here.

With this assessment the organization may decide what are the strategies around those features, or opportunities. It is a very detailed step on the dogfooding process, where they go all the way back to design and functional specification documents. They describe how this worked for BitLocker To Go^TM.
