More Productivity – Get things done and browse faster and easier. Microsoft gathered a huge amount of data to understand how people use the browser and the tasks they accomplish. IE 8 is designed out-of-the-box to help get tasks accomplished quicker along with an overall increase in browser performance and reliability. Webslices and Accelerators are innovations you’ll want which no other browser have.
- Performance – Overall page load times are faster than IE 6/7. Also, IE performs faster than Chrome or Firefox loading the entire page on half of the top 25 websites.
- Reliability – If a tab crashes, only the tab will crash – not the entire browser. Easily recover all of your tabs/sessions in the unlikely event of the entire browser crashing. Chrome does tab isolation, Firefox does session recovery, IE 8 is the only one to do both.
- Search – Automatically get more than just text visual search suggestions while you type along with a history of your previous searches for your favorite search plug-in such as Live search, Google, Facebook, or Wikipedia. Additionally, get a history of your previously visited websites and favorite sites as you type in the address bar.

Your company might develop a custom accelerator or find one of the existing ~100 which help your users.
- Webslices – Get a small “slice” visual update for frequently updating content such as stock quotes, traffic, ebay auctions, and weather - dropped down from the browser favorites bar. Your company might also develop a custom webslice or find one of the existing ~30 which might help your users.
Better Security – Don’t let leave your company at a higher risk by using a competing browser or an older version of IE. IE is the best browser at protection from malware and were the 1st to innovate with far more security and privacy enhancements than I can list below.
- Smart Screen Filter – protects you against evolving threats. Cross Site Scripting (XSS) is the most common class of software vulnerability and IE 8 protects you against type 1 “reflective” XSS attacks. Phishing and malware protection is enhanced to be more effective over IE 7. IE 8 is currently the only browser on the market to protect you against click-jacking vulnerabilities.
- In-Private Filtering – gives an added level of control and choice about the information 3rd- party websites can potentially use to track browsing activity.
- Per-Site and Per-User Active X controls – allows the lockdown of individual Active-X controls to a specific site or user(s), therefore significantly reducing the attack surface for Active-X controls, minimizing your risk.
- Domain Highlighting – automatically highlights the owning domain of whatever site you’re currently viewing. This helps users identify the real site they’re on when a website attempts to deceive them.
Granular Management – IE is the only browser which gives you the complete control to lockdown and fine tune features via group policy. There have been over 100 group policy settings added, bringing the total to ~1,400 policies (xlsx file) which allow you to easily control how you'd like to run IE in your environment.
Easy to Deploy – IE is the only browser on the market which allows the customization of the initial install package and gives you the support to deploy with so many options. IE 8 can be easily deployed using Windows Update, WSUS, SMS, SCCM, group policy, a network folder or even quickly slipstreamed into your existing Vista images. Furthermore, the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) 8 allows customization of the installation package and builds upon the functionality and feedback received from IEAK 7.
Easy to Migrate – With the capability to emulate IE7 on the browser and websites having the capability to force IE 8 into IE 7 mode with a simple piece of HTML code, there should be little reason to not move from IE 7 to IE 8 while maintaining compatability with your existing sites. IE 8 is embracing open standards for browsing and will continue to do so; in the long run making it easier for developers and IT Pros to do fewer testing with their web applications and upgrades, such as future generations of IE. Additionally, there are some great resources to help with your migration:
- Application compatibility toolkit (ACT) 5.0 – enables you to test your applications and websites to identify compatibility issues with IE 8 and Vista.
- IE 8 Add-on to report compatibility issues – This allows Microsoft to collect data you submit for public websites which you believe are having problems displaying. Microsoft works with or notifies the website owner or identifies and resolves potential IE 8 issues.
- IE 8 Developer tools – There is capability built-in to pass to your developers to fix your site
- VPC images to download for testing – images for: IE6 with XPSP3, IE7 with XPSP2, IE8 RC1 with XPSP3, and IE 7 with Vista.

IEAK 8 screencast demo and PM interview

Jatinder Mann gives us insight behind the new Internet Explorer Administration Kit 8 (IEAK 8) and then shows a screencast/demo explaining the new features. Jatinder is the program manager in charge of all of the great features IT Pros get with IE. IE offers IT Pros controls which no other browsers on the market can match, such as customizing the deployment with IEAK and locking down features and settings with over 1300 group policies. Jatinder gives some context as to when you might use IEAK vs IEM and group policy, why an IT Pro should care about IEAK, and explains the new configuration options for IEAK 8.

Pete LePage and IE 8 Compatibility Interview @TechEd Barcelona

I caught up with Pete LePage again, this in time in Barcelona. More importantly I caught up with him on my own turf at TechEd among all the wonderful IT Pros. Now he was the stranger in the strange land. We had a great conversation around how to think about Internet Explorer 8 and compatibility. BTW, yes that really is the Mediterranean Ocean behind us.

One of concepts we discussed in the interview was the x-ua compatible tag you can put in the HTTP Response Headers of your web servers. Look for a quick screencast to show how this is done in the near future. This metatag would affect all of the websites on the server:

"X-UA-Compatible value="IE=EmulateIE7"

Additionally the web developer can add a similar meta tag to the site or page. The fun question is what meta tag wins, if there is a conflict between the server, site, page or user setting? The answer is simple the page setting will always win in the case of a conflict.

For the last but not least part I wanted to talk briefly about the new improvements in reliability and compatibly inside IE8. While IE8 displays content in its most standards compliant way by default as part of Microsoft’s commitment to Interoperability, there is also a built-in compatibility model that allows for content to be displayed like it did in IE7. Since March, 2008, we have been proactively reaching out to site developers and content publishers worldwide, providing education and resources about this model. In my previous post I did talk a lot about browser interop (ScreenCast: Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 part 1: Interop Goodies), and how even in beta 1 how we had the emulate IE7 mode to help facilitate compatibility. In beta 2 we now have a new option called compatibility view, and you no longer have to restart the browser for it to the page to render in compatibility mode. Additionally different tabs can render differently Ultimately we still recommend that you modify the web site or server with the meta tag (click here to learn more: Defining Document Compatibility)

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 Faster and Easier Browsing

As you can tell I am pretty excited about IE8, I believe it will fundamentally improve’s everyone’s browsing experience, people like you and me, but also my dad. Honest story my dad knows how to search the web using live search, which in of itself is impressive, but when he finds let’s say an address to a restaurant, he pulls out a map to find directions. I know what your saying, we all pull out maps, but are they made out paper? My dad’s is. So how can a browser help, by bringing everyday online services to people like my dad, in a new function called accelerators. Accelerators are just one of the many improvements that extend your browsing experience beyond the page while staying connected with the things you care about most.

There is a fantastic list of new features, from search, find on page highlighting, tab improvements (work they way they are supposed to now)..etc, that I could fill my desktop with all the improvements, not to mention Webslices! So instead of me of doing that, while don’t I show you, take a look at the screencast where I showcase all the features that make IE 8 faster and easier to use.

Easy Steps to Get your Web Site to Support IE8

Any users accessing your site using the Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) browser ( currently in Beta ) will typically not get a very good rendering experience if your site was designed for Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) because of new standards that IE8 is supporting around HTML and CSS formats. There are two ways to resolve this.

1) The longer term option is to re-write your web application to render IE8 correctly - However this would not be my first choice.

2) The best ( to choose first off ) is to instruct any IE8 browsers to browse your site in IE7 emulation mode so that the current rendering is maintained. How do you do this? Simple

On a Per-site basis, site owners and administrators can include the following custom HTTP header to force Internet Explorer 8 to render Web pages like Internet Explorer 7:

X-UA-Compatible: IE=EmulateIE7

To add a custom HTTP response header at the Web site level in Internet Information Services 7 on a Windows Server 2008-based computer, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
Under Connections, double-click the server that you want, and then double-click Sites.
Click the Web site where you want to add the custom HTTP response header.
Under Web site name Home, double-click HTTP Response Headers in the IIS section.
Note In this step, Web site name is the name of the Web site.
Under Actions, click Add.
In the Name box, type X-UA-Compatible.
In the Value box, type IE=EmulateIE7.
Click OK.

You can also modify the IIS7 configuration file with the following details ( or you can check the config after the changes made above )

To add a custom HTTP response header at the Web site level in Internet Information Services 6 and earlier versions, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type inetmgr.exe, and then click OK.
Expand the server that you want, and then expand Web Sites.
Right-click the Web site that you want, and then click Properties.
Under Custom HTTP headers, click Add.
In the Custom header name box, type X-UA-Compatible.
In the Custom header value box, type IE=EmulateIE7.
Click OK two times.

Per-page basis

Site owners and administrators can include the following special HTML tag after the <Head> tag on the page:

Slipstreaming Internet Explorer 8 into Windows Vista

Lately, I have been doing a lot fun work with the IE 8 team. Look for a TechNet radio interview shortly I did with Jane Maliouta who is a IE Deployment Program Manager. In talking with Jane she told that she had written a post on how to slipstream IE 8 into an Windows Vista image. After checking out the post I decided to make a screencast to show how easy this is to do.

In the screencast I show how IE8 is going to help with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) 2.1 and browser interoperability. IE 8 will render in standards mode but with this meta tag:

 <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=7" />

In addition the CSS demos, I show some exciting HTML 5 features, specifically HTML 5's support for hash functionality, which allows some interesting interaction inside your AJAX applications. Also I show some of the support for connection events as well as HTML 5's DOM storage capabilities. These allow you to really have a near offline experience with IE. ScreenCast: Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 part 2: Activities and Webslices!

Activities allow you to avoid having to open several browsers to possible get to information you need. I like to think of them as "create your own URL". So how does it work, by simply selecting text you then get a "smart tag" style icon that allows to take action within context of the selected text. For example if you select an address one of your choices will be able to use a map. Activities are add-ins that do have to be installed for a list of activities that already exist take a look here: Add Activity Providers to Internet Explorer 8

Webslices are probably one of my favorite features inside of IE 8 and the first time I saw them in action, I was wowed. Webslices allow you to subscribe to content directly within a web page. Now the web pages do have to be coded on the web site to make this happen, to get started with this take a look here:
