[12:00] – Configuration: virtualize management on 1 host, virtualize messaging / security on a different host

[13:49] – Fault tolerance / redundancy for hardware failure on a physical host

[14:24] – EBS support with live and quick migration

[15:33] – What you should run on the virtualization host

[16:41] - What NOT to do with virtualization of EBS

[18:15] - One plus One (1+1) licensing : Hyper-V host using EBS premium SQL server as the parent partition

[20:34] – management story for EBS virtualization

[21:44] – showing EBS in Hyper-V

I met with EBS program manager Bjorn Levidow again who tells us all about what combinations can be done with the migration and some caveats you should think about when migrating.

[4:02] EBS migration similar to a kitchen remodel

[5:09] Hotfix to extend the migration timeline to 21 days

[6:44] Guidelines on when you might consider migrating from SBS to EBS

[8:02] Some of the most difficult aspects to migration

[9:58] Tips on migration of standalone environment to EBS

[11:20] Why you might want to migrate to EBS with up to 30 standalone servers in your environment

[12:48] When you know it is time to migrate away from EBS to standalone / full product

[13:55] What the transition from EBS to standalone is like

[14:35] What you can't do with EBS - i.e. "big no-no's"

[15:48] What happens when you hit the 300 client/user limit

Who is it for? Mid size businesses (25-300 PC environments) who are either interested in upgrading to EBS as well as anyone considering upgrades or even wanting just to get healthier.

What is it? A really great tool that scans the existing network environment looking for the most common mis-configuration and server health issues that affect setting up of new server roles. There are 91 different configurations that are scanned including:

· Active Directory

· DNS/Networking

· Exchange

· Windows Server Configuration (Service packs, Hard Drive Space, Memory, etc)

When does it ship? The EBS Preparation Tool is available TODAY!

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=E3906025-00E3-407D-BF5B-99D546021923&displaylang=en

Why is it cool? I needed to check out the details of a scan, so I reached out to a friend of mine who has an environment that is a perfect EBS candidate. He ran the tool and came up with a few errors and warnings. Below is an example of what you see when you use the tool (the name of the server has been removed for privacy reasons). Notice how the error not only tells you the name of the server and what issue it has, but also includes a link to the knowledge base article on correcting the issue.

What do I need to have before I can use the tool? The following software needs to be installed to run the Preparation Wizard:

· .NET Framework 1.1

· .NET Framework 2.0

· Microsoft Exchange Best Practices Analyzer (BPA) 2.8

· Make sure you have the latest service packs and updates for the .NET Framework.

· Be aware that there are IIS dependencies for the Exchange BPA.

· The Exchange BPA must be installed in the default location.

Get started

If you tune in for "Over the Edge" at 17:54, you'll learn what a Thrakkorzog is, a bit about Bjorn's medieval experience, and a technique to help you memorize things more easily. One other thing I noticed after the camera was off was his PHD and a couple of patents hanging on the wall.
Is it just a new version of Small Business Server (SBS)? Definitely not.
