DPM 2007 SP1 -- How does DPM really work

With all of the excitement around DPM 2007 and Service Pack 1, we wanted to take the opportunity to get under the covers and really talk about how DPM replicates data.

In this video, I'll cover a brief overview of DPM 2007 followed by:

How Express Full's work for block-level syncrhronization
How Transaction Logs are protected up to every 15 minutes
How the Replica and Recovery Point volumes work together in recovering to previous points in time
Ramifications and recommendations of different replication schedules for Express Fulls, per protected workload

DPM 2007 SP1 -- how to do individual item restore for Exchange

This video continues the series of feature-level podcasts on DPM 2007, this week focusing on Exchange Server and item level restore.

While DPM 2007 natively protects Exchange Storage Groups, and restores both SG's and DB's -- it does not directly restore mailboxes or individual items. For granluar recovery, we leverage the Recovery Storage Group (RSG), as prescribed by the Exchange product team. Direct individual item restore is not supported by Exchange (KB 904845) without using the Recovery Storage Group (RSG).

Ilse Van Criekinge, an Exchange MVP, does one of the best jobs that I've seen on how to do an individual item restore from Exchange Server 2007 with DPM 2007. She is a very impressive speaker on all things Exchange, so much so that she won 'Speaker Idol' at IT Forum 2007, and is a lead instructor at Global Knowledge. Ilse was kind enough to let me re-post this - from the Belux TechNet podcast library.

DPM 2007 SP1 -- Protecting Hyper-V

Easily one of the most anticipated features of Service Pack 1 for DPM 2007 is our protection for Hyper-V™.

DPM 2007 already protected Virtual Server 2005 R2, but as Microsoft customers have been moving towards Hyper-V, they wanted to continue the all-Microsoft backup & recovery solution for their Microsoft hypervisor.

More importantly, when compared with other backup solutions for virtualized environments:

DPM does not require a SAN to snap and remount VHDs elsewhere - it can use DAS, or any other locally mounted disk, on the Host, as well as the DPM server.
DPM does not require 3rd party backup software, even after the VHD is secured - its a complete solution on its own
DPM does not leave the VM dormant during the entire backup -- if it has to hibernate the VM, it brings it down, snaps it, and brings it right back up again. But for most Windows guests, it can protect with no downtime at all !

In fact, one can run DPM 2007 SP1 on the Hyper-V host itself, providing a self-contained solution.

And because DPM can replicate from one DPM server to another (DPM-2-DPM-4-DR), you can easily replicate your VHDs off-site (even to our cloud partner) !!
