Morgan Keegan on Exchange 2010

The last stop on the Exchange customer road trip was Memphis. We met with a couple guys from Morgan Keegan.

Exchange 2010 at Global Crossing

The second stop on the Exchange early adopter road trip was Vegas. The customer we visited with, Global Crossing, was actually just in town for a conference, but who am I to turn down a visit to Sin City?
Global Crossing is upgrading to Exchange 2010 to take advantage of the great new e-mail archiving, cheaper storage options, and as a replacement for its legacy voicemail system.
CIO Magazine also caught up with Global Crossing this week and posted this story on the cost savings the company hopes to realize by standardizing on Windows phones and EAS and moving off of BlackBerry smartphones.

Interview with Aidan Finn - Hyper-V, System Centre and IT Pro Momentum

Aidan Finn (Systems and Infrastructure Manager with C-Infinity) talks about why he chose NOT to go with VMware in favor of Hyper-V and System Centre.

Aidan is a System Centre MVP and an active blogger and user group leader. He has been engaged in IT Pro Momentum from the very begining. He talks about how he has used the program and how he shares his knowledge with others.

He closes out by sharing his plans for the up and coming R2 releases of Windows Server 2008, Hyper-V and System Centre.

Exchange 2010 at Lifetime Products

Road Trip!
I tagged along with the Exchange team to shoot some video of some customers who are using Exchange 2010 today.
Our first stop was Lifetime Products - manufacturer of basketball hoops, folding tables and all kinds of other cool stuff.
We talked with the CIO, President and VP of Sales and Marketing about all the new features and benefits they've gotten from Exchange 2010 - their story was even picked up by CIO magazine, you can read about it here.

Implementing System Center Operations Manager in a Large, Belgian Hospital

Alexandre Verkinderen, System Center Operations Manager MVP, talks about the monitoring solution he implemented at AZ Sint Maarten, a large Belgian Hospital. Sigurd Corluy, System Engineer for the hospital, joins and explains why they need a monitoring solution and why they chose SCOM 2007. The hospital has business-critical application needs, such as monitoring patient registrations and patient medical files. It has a custom-made management pack for these.

AZ Sint Maarten uses Savision LiveMaps in their NOC to display diagrams of the datacenter and business processes. The application provides an intuitive, graphical view of the health of their racks and business applications.

Webfarms and Virtualization with System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2

Sven Knockaert and Roel Van Steenberghe are two system administrators and lecturers from Kaho Sint-Lieven, an IT university in Ghent, Belgium. Sven talks about their implementation of virtualization with hyper-V 2008 R2 and SCVMM in courses such as system administration and operating systems. Hundreds of students each have at least 4 virtual machines running on hyper-V. Students can manage their virtual environment with the self-service portal in SCVMM.
Roel discusses implementation and use of IIS7. He explains how the concept of webfarms with IIS7 helps students serve individual webspaces to hundreds of other students. The university now uses both technologies extensively. Students in the study program are interested in staying in contact, and investigating new applications for these technologies.

Windows 7 Deployment Saves Money

Microsoft’s Blain Barton interviews PowerShell MVP and IT Pro, Max Trinidad, about his work in rolling out Windows 7. Using virtualization with Hyper-V, Max got his Windows 7 virtual machines running in just a few minutes, and his management praised the O/S’ stability.

Max cites savings in the fact that Windows 7 installs cleanly and runs on three year old hardware running XP. He reports strong productivity using PowerShell and the IT Pro Momentum program. The program provides documentation and support resources for pre-release products.

Case Study - MDT ease the workload of IT Generalist

John McCabe (Technical Consultant with CD Soft) talks about his production deployment of Office Communications Server 2007 R2 running on the beta of Windows Server 2008 R2. He explains how he convinced the business to deploy a beta product in production and what he thinks of Hyper-V R2 (he likes it)! He also explains why he didn't go with VMware.

CD Soft now run their entire business from a two-node Hyper-V cluster as well as providing a hosted OCS offering to their customers.

Virtualization in Malaysia

Earlier this year, Maria Green met with LB Tee in Malaysia to talk about a recent success story he had with one of his customers.
The customer, Morison ASQ, had an urgent need to get some broken functionality restored in their environment, and Tee suggested they use Microsoft virtualization to get systems deployed rapidly.
As you'll see in the interview, the project was very successfull, and was completed in under 3 weeks, with most uses unaware that their servers were now virtual.

SQL 2005 to 2008 upgrade with IDUR

Windows Vista at Carbocloro Brazil

Carbocloro is a chemical producer in Sao Paolo Brazil. When they deployed Vista, they saw both performance and security improvements to their infrastructure. The Vista deployment allowed them to implement company wide standards for desktop updates and management. They were able to move from seven deployment images to just one.
In this video Alaor da Silva talks about some of the challenges and processes that went into their Vista deployment, as well as the benefits and problems they were able to solve.
