In part 2 of this 2-part series, Jeremy shows how he built out the migration environment using the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010 Beta 1. After browsing the Deployment Workbench, Jeremy adds operating systems, applications, packages and drivers – then creates a standard client task sequence to manage all the steps in the migration. Just about everything is wizard-based and the hardest part in of the installation as shown is finding the command lines used to install the imported applications. If you haven’t seen part 1 already, I’d encourage you to start there. For more information on the tools and processes, see www.microsoft.com/deployment on TechNet.

I attempted this walkthrough on a Win2k8 R2 Standard x64 (7100) using Win AIK Beta 1 and during the Update of the deployment point ran into an error.

DISM was trying to find:  C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\x86\WinPE_OCs\winpe-scripting.cab but the WinPE_OCs folder didnt exist, I had a WinPE_FPs folder with winpe-scripting.cab inside, so I made a copy of WinPE_FPs and renamed WinPE_OCs and I re-ran the deployment update without errors.

Just an FYI for anyone else that may attempt the same scenario.

Does this mean Windows 7 doesn't have an upgrade feature like everything else did?

this video went way too fast to be of much value. some of the screens could not even be read in the time they were visible.

the choice of "move" over "copy" leaves one wondering. hardly ever move anything as as error during the process can be damaging. but in this context, not even sure of what move means...

I agree. Video is fast and hard to keep up with. I tried downloading the ipod mp4 version so I could watch during install. the video is grainy and difficult to see. I would also like to know, can I migrate from vista ultimate 32 bit to windows 7 in the same way?

almost forgot. can I migrate my vista settings to a new hard drive at the same time. my MB supports SATA drives. Can I save my image to external and install to fresh drive.

Yes, that WinPE folder name was changed with Windows 7 RC WAIK.

We have updated versions of both of these videos coming soon using RC WAIK and the newly released MDT 2010 Beta 2 bits - which will be consistent with the RTM experience.

Yes, migration from Windows Vista 32 bit is supported. You can even use MDT and USMT to migrate from Windows Vista 32 bit or Windows XP 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit. USMT supports 32-to-64 bit migrations from Windows XP and newer, but not 64-to-32 bit migrations.
