Introduction to Windows Deployment Services [6 Min ]

Last week I popped into Adam’s office to ask about Windows Deployment Services which is a feature that is built into Windows Server 2008. He showed me a quick 6 minute demo which shows how you can easily deploy operating systems to many desktops over the network without having to be physically present at each computer and without having to install CD media on each machine.

As you can see, Adam needs to clean his monitor a little.

Comments from Adam on initial WDS setup.

One minor configuration step that happens that you need to be aware of is that if your WDS server is also your DHCP server it needs to be configured to not listen on the DHCP port, and add a DHCP setting that redirects the boot requests to a different port.  The WDS console will do this for you automatically when you first start it up.  If DHCP runs on a different machine, you just need to add the Scope Option 060 value PXClient.

Nice to see some discussion of WDS. One minor thing - WinPE stands for Windows Preinstallation Environment.

This is around the 3rd or 4th time that I've attempted to watch an embedded video on Edge with no success. The video produces a couple centimeters of orange progress bar then idles. I have Silverlight installed on XP SP2 and this time I was prompted for an update yet no video. What gives guys?

So here is a solution to the problem.

First thing, please go to the control panel and remove silverlight.

Second, clear the cache on IE ( or install Firefox )

Reload the page, which will install the correct build of silverlight.

 

I think that you will then be all set after than.
