The Perimeter

Threads: 62 | Posts: 311
The Perimeter is a place where you can speak what’s on your mind and connect with people at Microsoft in an informal way. It’s a place where you can communicate with your peers and get feedback on the thoughts you have. The Perimeter is not a place to attack other people; if all of us follow the evangelism network doctrine, we all reap the benefits of what the Perimeter can provide.

Should Microsoft make a screaming laptop the clearly demonstrates Windows Vista running as it should run?  Would this "reference platform" sell?  What risk would there be to our existing partner channel by doing something so bold?

just a reminder that the Edge Survey is going live soon - if you're prompted to take it, please do - we'd like the feedback.

I'm supposed to get some of the survey results as the come in, so I'll use this thread to share those.

(I suppose if you have feedback about Edge you'd like to give, you can use this thread for that too)

Ok, I know this is short notice, but what would you like to ask the AD program managers?

I have some of my own thoughts, but I figure I'd just throw this post out there to see if anyone has any Qs they'd like to ask or have them talk about/clarify.

I'm doing interviews tomorrow.

I know a lot of developers.  One thing that makes me a little jealous is hearing them talk about how they 'ship' their products.  In my career as an IT Pro, I've finished lots of big projects, but never got to attend a ship party afterwards.  I've worked on some pretty significant deployments, that probably had teams and timelines that were similar in size to some product development teams, but at the end of the project, I remember just nodding our heads, shrugging our shoulders and moving on to the next one.  My developer friends, meanwhile, were throwing big parties every time they released an update to their code.

Do you, as an IT Pro, celebrate the end of your projects?  Should we?

Ok, Adam Bomb made an interesting find on one of my blog posts (Self-healing NTFS).  Amit had posted another "very similar" blog post without reference to my post at all.  I'm not mad or anything like that, but I am curious what others think on this subject...

Do you think it's acceptable to "hijack" another person's blog post and put some slight changes into it with or without a link to the original, or should you always link up to another person's post and only put your changes/additional comments in your own blog post?

Adam wrote this on his blog:

http://blogs.technet.com/adamca/archive/2008/01/29/my-interview-with-bob-muglia-bigwig.aspx

"I have a request for you:  At some point you've been using a Microsoft product, and asked yourself "what were they thinking when they made this?"  If you'll let me know what product you were using, and what made you want to ask that question, I'll grab my Edge camera and do my best to find an answer for you."

Lets help Adam create a new video series category.

I want Adam to chase down the SharePoint team and interview them about why they think "unexpected error occured" or "unknown error" would be helpfull to know when SharePoint [1] sees some kind of failure.

[1] It doesn't matter if it is WSS or MOSS.

I saw the errors a couple of times when i tried to create a new website and the Farm Services user account were locked out. I think i got three or four more extra grey hairs that day until i found out about the real failure.

Don't get me wrong, i love "unknown errors" because then i have to do unknown things to correct the problem and my boss allows me to yell obscene things at the computer (yelling obscene things is good for your blood pressure and so is good dark beer and chocolate).

I cannot believe Microsoft has announced the RTM of Windows Vista SP1 and then is going to make customers, sys admins and enterprises wait 6 weeks to get a copy of it. I cannot understand the logic of waiting until it appears on retail shelves and new OEM computers due to a "small subset of device drivers" so we can all experience the errors in unison. I surely see delaying the auto-update features - those set of drivers may get fixed. However, allow those who make their livings with technology to manually download the service pack as they can correct any problems from those drivers.

Microsoft is effectively going to push all of their fans to download this service pack illegally from the torrents and file sites as soon as it is leaked. Not a good position to be in. Another insular decision that, to me, illustrates the "two steps forward. one step back" nature of Microsoft goodwill.

The end of the video touches on user isolation!  Thats sounds promising.  Would like to learn more about the concept especially as regards crash protection.

I've had a few instances w/ TS2003 where one user would inadvertently bring the whole server down!

Hi Edge team, you are doing a wonderful job. It was one of my dream to have this sort of website for IT Pro when I first saw  Channel 9 many years back.

I'm looking for information where I can find why and How Groove can help the businessmen and to the people who are movig all the time. I'd appreciate if you take the interview of Groove guy.

Plus some technical interview of SCE2007 and how it can help the mid-size business.

I'll be publishing about these technologies myself on my blog adnanrafik.com/blog but at this time you will see few posts since it is new. :)

Keep doing this good job. I'm gonna put the link and publish in my next newsletter.

I looked at the tags and was amazed to see that there weren't any tagged PowerShell.  I figured that surely the Technet crew would be all into that by now.  Well if I can help get some media up here, let me know.  I co-host the PowerScripting Podcast with along with a fellow by the name of Jonathan Walz and I think the content is a perfect fit for this place.  We'd love to have input from you guys and if it makes sense to post the media files (audio only at present), we can consider doing that too.

If you are not yet a follower of the ways of the PowerShell, I'd love to get you all hooked on it.  Everything you do now in CMD batch files or Vbscript can be done easier in PowerShell, plus there's a whole lot more you can do you wouldn't even think of doing in Vbscript.

Some links to get you started:

From what I can tell RAID 5 is better for redundancy where as RAID10 or RAID 1+0 has better performance.

I know with RAID5 if a drive fails then the sever will still boot... Which is what I think is the great need.

What I'm not sure about is, is that the case with RAID10, if a drive fails and it has the OS installed on that RAID10 configuration will it still boot the OS?

Thanks

No we aren't talking about harvest time.  You may notice in the who's online section of the main page, that many of the icons are dorked up.  I mentioned this to the devs for this site and they indicated it's the picture people are uploading that is the issue, not the sites use of the pic.

You might want to experiment with your pic.  I believe the one I used originally was 90x90.

I am curious, it seems you are starting from scratch with this site instead of incorporating all the neat things you made\learned\created for channels 9 and 10. Why wouldnt you leverage all those great pieces? Although coming out after them it is instantly inferior to them. I feel like I got a Zune 30 after the Zune 80 came out ...

Ok, I'm going to start something fun.

We've all done some "Bandaids" to pull of a miracle of a type.  What's yours?   Come on.   Not the "SuperStuff" like rebuilding the database off the spanned drives when somebody deleted the partitions.

How about the "Simple but fun stuff" like builiding a loopback connector to make a Lan jack live on a stand alone PC with your teeth and some "twisty twisty"

Come on all.   Gimme yer stuff.    Forbid I end up using this as fodder for some type of Funny Friday post long term... :)

But we've all done it. (You stop lying, I see you there in the corner with your hammer and screwdriver crimping cables!   And you over there hotwiring your own power jack.   Stand up and join the crowd!)

Server Core + IIS7 + PHP + MySQL

Wow. Take Windows Server 2008 Server Core + PHP + IIS7 + MySQL + WordPress, mix them together, will they blend well and work out as a nice concoction? Matty challenged me to this blend, and guess what, we have a powerful cocktail to offer after all!

I scuffled around to see if anyone had come up with this powerful blend. Surprisingly, no one offered it on Server Core. There are bits and pieces everywhere, but none quite fit the blend we needed. I then decided to take up Matty’s challenge and come up with one.

With my buddy Matty, we decided to take a spin for it (He challenged me to it). The whole ordeal was over in a day and we finally got it working. Thanks to another great pal in the next cube, Chris Ismael (Interop Expert).

Alright, here is the story on my adventure.

Suggestions for improvement - can there be some "crumb" navigation at the top of the forums so I dont have to go out to the PERIMETER link at the top each time? Or once I am in the top level of a thread a way to go side-to-side across to the top level of the next thread? So far, great job and I am looking forward to more improvements.

What phone do you use and why?

Me = t-mo dash. I gave back the Shadow because of the keyboard, having to open the slider to unlock the phone very 15 mins, and sucky battery life.

The dash battery is going strong after two days, and the KB is just fine for my fat fingers. I miss my SDA, but the dash screen is as bright, tho wider.

While we were sound asleep this morning, the Europeans were announcing some important details about the Windows Server 2008 family of products.  One of the most interesting announcements wasn't the new name for Windows Server virtualization (WSv) now called Hyper-V.  No, instead the most fascinating detail is the price.  $28 US.  WOW!  I thought it was a typo the first time I saw it.

Here are the details from the press release:

Microsoft Hyper-V Server

Microsoft Hyper-V Server, a hypervisor-based server virtualisation product, complements the Hyper-V technology within Windows Server 2008, allowing customers to consolidate workloads onto a single physical server. In addition, Microsoft Hyper-V Server will increase original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partners’ ability to offer customers simplified, reliable and cost-effective virtualisation solutions that can easily plug in to their existing infrastructure. Partners including Dell Inc, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Fujitsu Ltd, Hitachi Ltd, HP, IBM Corp, Lenovo, NEC Corp and Unisys are already committed to working with Microsoft to offer solutions based on Microsoft Hyper-V Server once it is available. The estimated manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for Microsoft Hyper-V Server is $28 (US).

“Microsoft and Dell are continuing to work together to provide virtualisation solutions and by offering Microsoft Hyper-V Server across a wide variety of Dell servers,” said Rick Becker, vice president of Software and Solutions at Dell. “Our joint customers can continue to leverage their expertise with Microsoft technologies to rapidly provision new services and better manage and simplify their IT environment.”

“The combination of Microsoft Hyper-V Server, industry-leading HP ProLiant and BladeSystem servers, and our comprehensive services portfolio provides customers with an adaptive infrastructure that is simple to operate, reliable and cost-effective,” said Scott Farrand, vice president of Industry Standard Server Software at HP. “HP plans to support customers in the adoption of Microsoft Hyper-V Server by delivering solutions that help them realise the benefits of a virtualised environment.”

Server Virtualisation Validation Program

In response to industry and customer demands for more comprehensive technical support of virtual machines, Kelly also announced the Server Virtualisation Validation Program. Beginning in June 2008, vendors will be able to self-test and validate certain technical requirements of their server virtualisation software running Windows Server 2008 and prior versions. The programme will enable Microsoft to offer cooperative technical support to customers running Windows Server on validated, non-Windows server virtualisation software.

“Microsoft has worked with industry partners to create a technical support model that will meet customers’ growing demands,” Kelly said. “As more customers deploy and virtualise Windows-based applications on Windows Server 2008 or other server virtualisation software, this programme will help ensure that customers receive a joint support experience for their physical and virtual infrastructure deployments.”

“Technical support of virtualised images is an industrywide challenge,” said Roger Levy, senior vice president and general manager of Open Platform Solutions for Novell. “Our relationship with Microsoft provides us with a jointly supported solution today. Novell and Microsoft continue to collaborate to optimise bidirectional virtualisation between Windows and SUSE Linux Enterprise with Xen. Microsoft’s server virtualisation validation programme provides customers with additional peace of mind when they run Windows as a guest in a validated environment such as SUSE Linux Enterprise.”

See the remaining details @ http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/virtualization/default.mspx and http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/editions/overview.mspx.

I've placed a few in my Flickr feed tagged with TechNet Edge, so you can get an idea.  If you do something, please reply here and share with us all.

Looking forward to meeting you.

I would love that my TechNet sub grants me a Connect sub for new betas and such. Specially, to give feedback of them and be helped out on them.

Possible to mix them all up?

Hey there,

The Perimeter is a place where you can speak what’s on your mind and connect with people at Microsoft in an informal way.  This is a place where you can communicate with your peers and get feedback on the thoughts you have.  The Perimeter is not a place to attack other people; if all of us follow The Evangelism Network Doctrine, we all reap the benefits of what the Perimeter can provide.

Welcome.

It seems that i'm unable to edit my profile or visit the Media page?! Maybe because the website isn't launched yet?
